Preventing Altitude Sickness is Key
• Never wash your hair or take a bath on the first day you arrive – it can make blood vessels dilate and worsen altitude sickness.
• Take it easy for the first 3 days: drink plenty of warm water (at least 2000ml a day), and don’t overeat, overdrink, or binge.
• You can take Hongjingtian (a herbal supplement) 1-2 days in advance, but remember it only helps prevent altitude sickness, not cure it. If you get headaches, palpitations, or other symptoms, take ibuprofen right away or go to a hospital for oxygen.
• The UV rays in Tibet are over 3 times stronger than in inland areas. Make sure to bring high-SPF sunscreen (SPF50+), a sun hat, sunglasses, and a sun-protective mask – otherwise you’ll get sunburned or tanned badly.
2. Respect Local Culture
• When entering a temple, take off your hat and don’t take photos (unless you get permission). Never touch Buddha statues, scriptures, or lamas’ ritual tools.
• Don’t take photos of Tibetan people casually, especially elders and kids – always ask for their consent first.
• Avoid talking about “sky burials” casually in front of others, and never step on prayer flags or mani stones (stone piles with carvings).
3. Other Important Tips
• Clothing: Even if you go in summer, bring a windproof jacket or a thin down coat. The temperature difference between day and night in Tibet can be over 15℃.
• Transport: Some roads in Tibet are in poor condition – new drivers shouldn’t drive there on their own. If you rent a car with a driver, use a formal platform and sign a detailed contract.
